Because it’s a feeling and not just a place.
I grew up in Cornwall, and I live in Newquay now, but I still haven’t got used to it. There are moments here, often small and fleeting, that feel like pure magic: light pouring into a sea cave, geese calling over the dunes, a fire crackling on the sand at dusk. I’ve spent years chasing those moments with my camera, and this is my little love letter to them.
Some of these places you’ll recognise and some I’ll keep to myself, but I hope each one brings back a feeling of your own. Many of these photographs are also available as fine-art Cornwall prints.
Cornwall moments that feel like magic
Light pours through the sea cave at Nanjizal, and for a moment it feels as if the whole beach is holding its breath. This is the Cornwall I grew up with: wild, quiet and a little bit magic. It’s the feeling I try to catch every time I lift my camera.
When you’re the only one on the beach
Early mornings, or the shoulder months, when the coast path is empty and you scramble down to find nothing but your own footprints. There’s a particular kind of freedom in having a whole cove to yourself, even if it’s only for ten minutes.
When sea mist creeps over a sunset
Cornwall’s weather keeps you on your toes. Some of my favourite evenings are the ones that don’t go to plan, when a soft sea mist rolls in and turns a golden sunset into something hazy and dreamlike.
Running between sand dunes
The marram grass catching the light, warm sand underfoot and that slightly breathless feeling of racing to the top of a dune to see the sea. It makes me feel about seven years old again.
Coming out of the ocean when the light starts to fade
A surfer heading in as the sun drops, the sand turning to glass. Evenings like this are the reason I named my print shop Between Tides; it’s that in-between moment, when the day is softening and everything glows.
Getting to the beach and knowing it’s going to be a good day
Blue skies, glassy water and that first glimpse of the cove from the cliff path. You just know. Pack the flask, the towel and the good snacks, because you won’t want to leave.
When the light hits just right
Photographers talk about golden hour like it’s a science, but really it’s a feeling. The cliffs glow amber, the shadows stretch out, and every rock and pebble looks as if it’s been painted.
Wild horses
One of my favourite surprises: stepping into a quiet woodland and finding a pony grazing among the trees. Cornwall isn’t only beaches; its moors and woods have their own kind of magic.
Beach evenings with loved ones
Sunsets mean more when they’re shared. Some of my happiest memories are of evenings on the sand with family and friends, paddling in the shallows as the sun slips below the horizon.
Sea diamonds
When the low autumn sun hits the water and the whole sea sparkles. I could watch it for hours, and this moment became one of my favourite prints, Sea Diamonds.
When the water is THAT turquoise
Every visitor says it, and every local secretly agrees: on the right day, Cornwall’s water is impossibly clear and impossibly blue. No filter needed.
Footsteps in the sand
Squeezing through a gap in the rocks to find a fresh, untouched beach on the other side. There’s something so satisfying about being the first to leave footprints after the tide has wiped the sand clean.
Pink skies
Walking the cliff path as the sky blushes pink and the light fades over the sea. It’s my favourite time of day for a walk, and the reason my camera always comes too.
Fires at dusk
A beach fire, a blanket and the sound of the waves. Cornwall evenings were made for this. Just remember to keep it safe, check the local rules and take everything home with you.
When you escape the crowds and find peace
Even in the busiest summer weeks, Cornwall still has quiet corners if you know where to look. A lighthouse in the mist, the water perfectly still and not another soul around.
The quiet, calm moment when it rains during a busy summer
Rain in Cornwall gets a bad name, but I love it. When the summer crowds disappear indoors, the gardens and woods drip and glisten and everything smells fresh and green.
Being on the water at sunrise
Out on the water before the rest of the world wakes up, with the sea like silk and the sky slowly warming. It’s the closest thing to meditation I know.
Canadian geese calls
Hearing the geese before you see them, then watching them fly low across a pastel sky at Gwithian. It’s such a simple moment, but it stops me in my tracks every time, and it became my print Canadian Geese, Gwithian.
Hiding between the trees when it rains
Cornwall’s subtropical gardens come alive in a summer shower: tree ferns, rhododendrons and bluebells all glossy with rain. Duck under the canopy and just listen.
When Cornwall feels like the Caribbean
And then there are days like this. Turquoise water, white sand and granite headlands glowing in the sun. Moments like these remind me how lucky I am to call Cornwall home.
Why Between Tides
Between tides is that space when the sea has pulled back and left everything shining, when the light softens and the day slows down. It’s where I feel most at home, and it’s the feeling I want my prints to bring into yours. Whether you grew up here, holiday here every summer or are still dreaming of your first visit, I hope a little of Cornwall’s magic finds its way to you.
Bring a little Cornwall home
Many of the moments in this post are available as fine-art prints, printed on Fuji Matt paper and available unframed or framed in oak, black or white.
